Classic Egypt with a Nile cruise
The pyramids and museums of Cairo, then four nights sailing from Luxor to Aswan.
From $1,150 per person
For those who want more than the famous names: Meidum, Akhenaten's city at Amarna, the painted tombs of Beni Hassan, Abydos and Dendera, then a Nile cruise and Abu Simbel.
Your guide meets you at the airport, helps with the visa and drives you to your hotel. The rest of the day is yours to rest after the flight.
The pyramids of Giza and the Sphinx, then the Step Pyramid of Djoser at Saqqara and the Bent and Red Pyramids at Dahshur, where you can walk down inside the Red Pyramid. Lunch at a local restaurant.
A morning in the Grand Egyptian Museum with Tutankhamun's gold, then the Hanging Church and the old Coptic quarter, and an evening walk through the Khan el-Khalili bazaar. Lunch at a local restaurant.
Leave Cairo south to the collapsed pyramid of Meidum, standing alone in the fields, and walk inside its burial chamber. Continue along the Nile valley to Minya for three nights. Packed lunch, dinner at the hotel.
Cross the Nile to the capital that Akhenaten and Nefertiti built for one god, the sun disk Aten. The northern palace, the boundary stela and the rock tombs of his courtiers, with their rare scenes of royal family life.
The painted rock tombs of Beni Hassan, where Middle Kingdom nobles left scenes of wrestlers, hunters and daily life. Then Hermopolis and the catacombs of Tuna el-Gebel, with the tomb of Petosiris.
Drive south to Abydos, the holy city of Osiris. The temple of Seti I has some of the finest carved reliefs in Egypt and the famous list of kings, and behind it lies the mysterious Osireion. Night beside the temple.
The temple of Hathor at Dendera, with its blue astronomical ceiling and the rooftop chapels. On to Luxor to board your five-star cruise, then Karnak and Luxor Temple in the late afternoon.
Three tombs in the Valley of the Kings, the temple of Hatshepsut and the Colossi of Memnon, with an optional sunrise balloon first. Back on board for lunch as the boat sails south to Edfu.
A horse carriage takes you to the temple of Horus at Edfu. Afternoon tea on the sun deck as you sail to Kom Ombo, the double temple of Sobek and Horus, and its crocodile museum.
Before dawn, the road to Abu Simbel and the great temples of Ramses II and Nefertari. Back in Aswan in the afternoon for the island temple of Philae. Last night on board.
Breakfast on board, disembark and take the short flight to Cairo. Free afternoon, or a last stroll in Khan el-Khalili with your guide.
